This Stickley Style Chair and Rocker is clearly from the Roycroft community. The finish on these chairs is fumed oak, a process that was popular during the Arts and Crafts movement (circa 1900-1915). Ammonia fuming is a process that darkens wood and brings out the grain pattern. It consists of exposing the wood to fumes from an aqueous solution of ammonia which reacts with the wood to produce the dark finish. This procedure not only darkens the wood, but allows the grain to show through prominently. These pieces are solid quarter sawn oak with straight and sturdy construction, a trait seen throughout the Arts and Crafts era. The cushions have been replaced with a clean and comfortable high quality vinyl material in a dark hew. This set is the "real thing" and not a reproduction, so it deserves your consideration.
