An OAK COMMODE or wash stand is a popular item, perhaps because of the small size. There are various configurations, but this one has two drawers with brass hardware and two doors. The towel bar is removable, but it is original to this piece. The intent of pieces such as this was to use them as wash stands with a pitcher and bowl on top before running water became available. Today they are used as night or lamp stands. A sweet stand such as this could be found in any bedroom at the turn-of-the-century.
